As the fate of the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) customized postage program hangs in the balance, Stamps.com (STMP), Minted.com and the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers all filed comments with the Postal Regulatory Commission in favor of leaving the program intact with perhaps a few minor modifications to resolve an outstanding USPS legal issue pertaining to a customer’s desire to order PhotoStamps with “some pleasant, innocuous Christian images.”

With results from the last of the March quarter reporters out, it remains clear that most vendors experienced elongating sales cycles in the final weeks of Q1 but have seen activity levels rebound thus far in Q2. That said, few have expressed any great confidence that recent trends will remain intact through the more critical selling period near quarter-end and only a small minority are willing to put forth expectations beyond the current quarter.

We spent the week digesting the first major wave of Q1 ’20 software earnings, although much of what we observed was consistent with commentary from those that have already pre-announced. Business momentum was strong for most through January and February, but March brought a spate of challenges as organizations prioritized the transition of their employees to work-from-home amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A month after the initial rollout of measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus across the U.S., the economic toll continues to climb with another 5.2 million unemployment claims filed. Even so, the software industry has fared reasonably well considering the circumstances with the group exhibiting gains on average for the second consecutive week.
